Scottish Barbie is from the first wave of the Dolls of the World collection — one of the original releases when Mattel began sending Barbie around the globe in 1981, packaged in the bright rainbow-stripe box that first-wave DOTW collectors recognise immediately. The tartan she wears has a history worth knowing.

Tartan patterns were technically banned in Scotland from 1746 to 1782 under the Act of Proscription — passed after the Jacobite Rising to suppress Highland clan identity — and when the ban was finally lifted, the Highland romance movement associated with Sir Walter Scott and later Queen Victoria's love of Balmoral turned tartan into one of the most commercially successful textile patterns in history. A trajectory that includes, at the end of a very long chain of consequence, this particular doll.
